A Curly Girl’s Dream | Curlfest 2017

This weekend Curly Girls Collective hosted their annual Curlfest for 2017, in the heart of Brooklyn’s very own Prospect Park.

As many of you know (or don’t know) Curlfest was held this weekend on July 15, 2017, in Brooklyn’s very own Prospect Park. Some of you who may have never heard of this event is wondering, what exactly is Curlfest?

Curlfest is an event that was created by Curly Girl Collective. Curly Girl Collective is a company that consists of 5 amazing black woman by the names of Charisse Higgins, Melody Henderson, Tracey Coleman, Simone Mair and Gia Lowe. Their mission is ” To create innovative experiences, that harness the energy of the natural hair movement. And showcases the best brands for modern woman of color.” And that is exactly what they bring to you through their Curlfest Festivals.

Some of the biggest names in natural hair and skin care were in attendance, such as Iman Cosmetics, Topic Isle Living, Creme Of Nature, Mielle Organices, ORS Olive Oil For Naturals, Clairol, Alike Naturals, Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Palmers, Bumble & Bumble, Lottabody, Sashapure, Nubian, Shea Moisture, Eden, Curls and Camille Rose. I am sure I am missing a few vendors, but you get the idea. Not only did they bring their products to be showcased, but also aided in the application of products. So that we, the consumers can see if their products work well for us first hand. And if you are impressed, there products for sale as well. In addition to being able to purchase products, if you were a ticket holder you were given products for free! Not a bad deal if you ask me.

Also a DJ was present, there were activities that you could participate in, and also other vendors who made and sold items such as clothing and accessories were able to set up stations to sell their products to the public.

Upon my arrival, the energy was through the roof! It was so overwhelming, I just had to stand there and take it in for a bit. And although the energy was a tad bit overwhelming, it was definitely beautiful at the same time. There was so much melanin everywhere! It was phenomenal. It was an explosion of beautiful black men and woman. In that moment I was so proud to adorn the skin that I was in. All different shades of blackness was present. And hair? Omg so many different natural hair colors, styles, types and textures. Men and woman! Men with these full gorgeous, well kept beards (yes I am a sucker for a man with a well groomed beard). It was really a nice place to be and I am so glad I had the opportunity to attend, even if I was mega late.

The fact that I was late did not take away from the opportunity to walk throughout and take pictures for you guys to get an idea of what to expect, if you should chose to attend next year.

  1. What an amazing event. When I saw this event on my news feed I knew it’d be perfect for my natural curly haired 4yr old. He loves his hair and will just at home at curl fest. Unfortunately I went for the creamy crack and have been addicted since, and there’s almost no turning back for me now lol. But I do admire natural curly hair. Love the photos you shared too. Looks like so much fun!

  2. CurlFest sounds like a natural’s dream come true. I’m so glad that more events like this are popping up around the country now to celebrate our curlfriends. I can tell from the photos that the energy was poppin!

  3. I’m so sad that I wasn’t able to attend CurlFest! My social media was buzzing with pics and vids of the festivities. It looked like a ton of fun! And I just love seeing all that natural hair in one space! I’ll have to look out for the festivities next year.

  4. I was not able to attend this year but our brand was present taking pictures for our IG: Type4Naturals. From the pictures, it lookek bigger and better than the prior years. Awesome summer event for NYC.

  5. Both my daughter and I are naturally curly girls so I’m adding this to my list of events to attend for next year. I hate that I missed. I definitely looked like a great event.

  6. Love curlfest! Great way for us to celebrate our natural hair. I always miss it. Will definitely have to free my calendar next year! Your jumper us very cute by the way.

  7. I would have had a ball at curlfest! Did you get an samples? I’m in a place now where I want to relax the curl a little since it’s just too much hair and I can’t do anything with it. It would be nice to see what’s new on the market.

  8. I went for the first time this year… it was nice to see a sea of black beauty. From the lightest to the darkest it was a really good look. I was trying to take notes on some of the dope hairstyles I want to recreate.

  9. The different people and styles at CurlFest really showcase a beautiful diverse culture. The idea behind the festival is phenomenal and I want to attend one day in the future.
